Newly released body camera footage reveals a harrowing encounter between a Colorado police officer and a woman who allegedly pulled a gun during a routine traffic stop.
The incident occurred just before 5 PM on July 25th when a Westminster, Colorado officer, identified as Nick Adams, noticed an SUV parked in the road facing the wrong direction. Approaching a Jeep nearby, Officer Adams attempted to assess the situation, asking the driver, later identified as 46-year-old Alicia Duran, about the circumstances.
Despite Adams’ inquiries, Duran initially refused to engage, remaining silent and unresponsive. Concerned for her well-being, Adams persisted, asking if she needed medical assistance. It was only when he asked about alcohol consumption that Duran responded, denying any drinking.
However, the situation took a drastic turn when Duran reached for something in her middle console. Adams, noticing her actions, repeatedly asked what she was reaching for before realizing it was a gun. In a swift reaction, Adams grabbed Duran’s arm before retreating and firing his weapon.
The body camera footage captured Adams’ urgent call for backup and his attempts to ensure Duran’s safety after the shooting. Tragically, Duran succumbed to her injuries, and Adams, visibly distressed, apologized to bystanders and sought to comfort them amidst the chaos.
The incident has sparked an investigation, and Officer Adams has been placed on administrative leave pending its outcome. As the community awaits answers, the encounter serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily.
