An officer with the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) was shot in the right arm during an exchange of gunfire at an apartment complex in New Orleans East on Tuesday, April 21. The injured officer was quickly transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

According to Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, the officers were responding to a report of an aggravated assault suspect at a residence in the 6700 block of Bundy Road. Upon entering the residence, an exchange of gunfire erupted between the officers and the suspect.

“The officers entered that residence at which time an exchange of gunfire ensued,” stated Ferguson. “An officer was shot in the right arm… I had the occasion to see him at the hospital. He was in great spirits and was responsive in stable condition.”

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Horace Toppins, was apprehended without sustaining any injuries. Toppins was arrested and subsequently booked on a count of attempted first-degree murder.

The officer who was shot has not been publicly identified at this time. A woman who was present inside the apartment during the shootout shared a video of the aftermath, showing the wounded officer lying on the ground and receiving assistance from fellow first responders.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties to protect and serve the community. The NOPD and other law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
