A video shared hundreds of times on social media shows an officer allegedly attacking a Black woman walking her dog near the lakefront. The incident, recorded early Saturday morning, has sparked outrage and prompted an investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA).
In the cellphone footage, a woman can be heard screaming for help as she struggles with an officer. According to her attorney, the altercation began after the officer asked the woman to leave the beach because it was closed. The woman’s legal team claims she was complying with the order when the confrontation escalated.
“For some reason, this officer decided to specifically interact with and then ultimately attack her,” said Alexis, the woman’s attorney, calling it a brutal and unprovoked attack. The attorney emphasized that the woman was in the process of leaving the park when the incident occurred.
Chicago police have acknowledged the video and stated that they are working with COPA to investigate. COPA has confirmed their collaboration with the woman’s attorney, expressing the need to formally identify the officer involved to proceed with a formal complaint.
The woman reportedly called 911 when she arrived home and spoke with a sergeant about the altercation. She believes she was targeted because of her race, noting that others were also leaving the beach without incident.
In the video, a Chicago police officer can be heard telling the woman that he is turning on his camera to record the incident. COPA is expected to provide more details as the investigation continues.
