Simone Biles Defends Husband Against Critics Over Gold Medal Controversy
Simone Biles recently responded strongly to critics who attacked her husband, Jonathan Owens, for wearing her gold medal. She labeled these detractors as “f**king miserable” and demanded they leave her family alone.
The incident began on Tuesday, July 30th, shortly after Biles, 27, and Team USA secured the all-around team gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. That evening, Owens, Biles’ husband, posted a photo on Instagram with his arm around Biles and her gold medal draped around his neck. He captioned the photo, “Witnessing history every time you step on the mat. Congrats, baby, on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history. Just wow, eight of them so far. Thanks. I was there to see it.”
The post quickly garnered over a million likes and many supportive comments, including one from Biles herself, who wrote, “My whole heart. I love you.”
However, some fans were upset with Owens for wearing the medal. One user commented, “Give the medal back, baby, that’s not yours.” Another added, “I’m annoyed that he’s holding it like BFF; it’s not yours.”
The controversy spread to TikTok, where influencer Kira Brog shared the photo with her commentary: “Take her medal off. Was it you, Mr. Simone Biles, who was flying through the air yesterday? Was it you who spun like a top 30 times in the air and landed without stumbling? No, you were taking notes in the audience. I thought that was cute, but after everything, he should let Biles wear the medal for the picture he posts. That could be a simple PR move.”
Biles quickly jumped into the comments to defend Owens. “Crazy thing is, I put my medal on every single one of my family members and took pictures. So don’t ever make assumptions,” she wrote. “Like y’all are so f**king miserable, leave us alone.”
Brog responded to Biles’ comment with another video, expressing that she was honored to be told to “F off” by such a talented woman.
Biles and Owens, a safety for the Chicago Bears, began dating in 2020 and were married in 2023. Owens has been in Paris for the past week to support his wife.
Despite the backlash, the couple remains unfazed, continuing to share their joyous moments with the world. Their unwavering support for each other showcases the strength of their relationship, proving that no amount of online criticism can tarnish their celebration of Biles’ monumental achievements. As Biles continues to make history, Owens stands proudly by her side, reinforcing their bond both on and off the public stage.
