The controversy began when Taraji P. Henson, known for her powerful performances in films like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Hustle & Flow, accused Oprah of underpaying her for her role in the upcoming film adaptation of The Color Purple. In an emotional interview on Gayle King’s SiriusXM show, Taraji revealed that Oprah’s initial offer was so low that she nearly walked away from the project. “I wasn’t a greedy person,” Taraji said, “but I know my worth, and I’m not going to belittle myself or my talent.”
Taraji’s admission opened the floodgates, as she further disclosed that her salary had not increased in over six years, despite her continued success in Hollywood. She highlighted a systemic issue that extends beyond her own experiences, pointing out that many other Black actors face similar challenges when it comes to pay disparities and inequality. “Every time I break another glass ceiling,” Taraji lamented, “when it’s time to renegotiate, I’m back at the bottom again, like I never did what I just did.”

The leaked emails suggested that Sony believed their international earnings would have been higher if a white actor had taken the lead in Denzel’s film The Equalizer.
Denzel’s experience underscores a broader issue in Hollywood: the pressure to capitalize on Black trauma for entertainment purposes. This raises serious questions about the role of Black power players in the industry, like Oprah, and whether they are using their influence to uplift their peers or perpetuating the very system that oppresses them.
