Modesto, California – In a heartbreaking incident that occurred on August 14 , the Modesto Police Department released body camera footage depicting a fierce exchange of gunfire between officers and a male suspect, resulting in one officer being seriously injured. The confrontation took place at a residence where police pursued the suspect and obtained a search warrant.

The incident began when police followed Joshua Harrington, 34, who fled on a motorbike, to a home in Modesto. Upon receiving a search warrant for the premises, officers were met with gunfire from 42-year-old Jesse James Brooks. The unexpected and violent exchange left Officer Michael Rokaitis seriously injured.

Officer Rokaitis, struck by Brooks’ bullets, required immediate medical attention. Since then, he has had seven surgeries, including a partial amputation of his right leg, reflecting the severity of his injuries. He spent 12 days in the ICU before his condition stabilized. Despite his life-changing injuries, Officer Rokaitis is now on the road to recovery with the support of his family and colleagues.

Police Chief Brandon Gillespie praised the bravery and quick response of the officers involved in the shooting. “Our officers demonstrated remarkable courage in the face of imminent danger,” Chief Gillespie said in a statement. “Their actions helped prevent further escalation and ensured the safety of the surrounding community.”

Brooks, who was injured in the exchange, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital. He faces a series of charges, including three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and multiple weapons violations. Additionally, Brooks has an outstanding United States Marshall Warrant for violating probation.
