In a harrowing turn of events, a routine traffic stop in Naperville quickly escalated into a life-threatening situation when a hatchet-wielding man attacked a police officer. The Naperville Police Department has released footage captured at the scene, shedding light on the shocking incident that unfolded earlier this month.

Chief Jason Aires of the Naperville Police Department expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, identified as 28-year-old Edward Summary, emphasizing the tragic loss of life. The incident occurred near the intersection of Bond Street and McDowell Road, where a 22-year veteran officer initiated a traffic stop for a minor violation.

Within 11 minutes of the traffic stop, a second vehicle approached, and a man swiftly exited the vehicle, charging at the officer with a hatchet in hand. The body-worn camera footage captured the intense confrontation, with shots fired shortly after the assailant lunged at the officer.

Backup arrived swiftly, less than two and a half minutes after the initial shots were fired. Medics also arrived promptly, but despite their efforts, the suspect was pronounced deceased upon arrival at the hospital.

The release of this footage provides a closer look at the events that transpired during the encounter. It underscores the importance of body-worn cameras in providing transparency and accountability in law enforcement interactions. The Naperville Police Department recently began issuing body cameras to its officers, with full implementation expected by the end of June.

An independent investigation into the incident is currently underway, led by the DuPage Integrity Team and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. While details regarding the driver initially pulled over in the traffic stop have not been disclosed, it is evident that the situation escalated rapidly, resulting in a tragic loss of life.

As the investigation progresses, authorities continue to work diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter. The release of the body camera footage serves as a testament to the department’s commitment to transparency and accountability in law enforcement operations.
