Let’s have a discussion about Zach Edy, arguably the most dominant college basketball player in this past year of college basketball season.
Probably one of the most dominant in college basketball in a very, very long time.
Also one of the most dominant centers in college basketball history as well.
Ed’s college resume is up there with the greatest of all time.
He stuffed the stat sheet this past season, averaging 25.2 points per game, 12.6 rebounds per game, 12.6 assists per game, while shooting 62% from the field and 71% from the free throw line, attempting 11 shots from the foul line- a game numbers we have not seen in college basketball since many alltime Legends.
He was the first basketball player since Oscar Robinson to lead the nation in scoring and Lead his team to the final four.
The first player since Kareem Abdul Jabar to score 50 points, grab 35 rebounds and shoot 65% from the field in the first two rounds of the Ncaa tournament.
And the only player in Ncaa history since David Robinson to reach 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 blocks while shooting over 60% for their careers.
Also the first player since Larry Bird to amass 875 points and 435 rebounds in a season.
Now you would think this is a name being thrown around.
The alltime greats of basketball history would have you thinking he is at least a top five pick in this year’s Nba draft.
Well, you’re going to have to think again, as many are questioning his Nba future, just due to the fact how much different today’s modern Nba is in comparison to 20 years ago.
If we’re looking at the 90s and 2000s and even the early 2010s, Ed would be a Surefire top three pick at his size, standing at 7 fo4 300 Pb, an absolute unit in the paint at both ends.
You can almost compare it to Yao Ming’s impact, even though ya was 4 in taller.
You could see the similarities in how Ed could be major in the paint, getting into his post game and dominating with his touch, and also clogging the paint up, with his length and his size being almost immovable in post-up situations at 300 lb.
You almost think he should have played in an era where the big men and post game was at an extremely high usage rate.
But in today’s Nba, spread out all five perimeter guys, guys on the line and spacing his game is in question.
Rightfully so, as that 7′ 4 300lb frame, will he have the ability to move his feet with guarding the likes of guys like Kd, wemi or Ch, who can spread the floor at 7 foot but can move off the dribble like guards.
Now, if you look at Zach, early on in his career his Mobility was a major issue.
But if you pull the tape of his last few seasons, his Mobility guarding guards has improved d a lot.
Obviously still not a strength, but has understood how to move his feet and use his length and angles to his advantages to cause other opponents discomfort.
Now, with this being the case, it may be that Ed will have to play in certain lineups.
With certain team matchups he he definitely will be thrown in a lot of pick and rolls to be worn down throughout the game.
So do I see him being a 30 minute plus player?
I don’t believe so.
Just because of his weight at 300 lb, the conditioning won’t catch up, but I definitely see an impact for a solid 25 minutes.
The best comparison I see for Ed is what zubach is for the Clippers: a big body that uses his size on the boards and in the post, except Ed provides better touch around the rim, in my opinion.
And another plus is he shoots free throws at a good rate of 71%.
Ed can definitely take advantage of undersized teams but can eventually get exploited in today’s Nba spacing.
The only possible way I see Edy even being more than half of what he was in college is if you had an Nba Defensive system like the Timberwolves and how they run their defense all around.
Rudy strength, but you need a lot of dogs and length on the defensive end to help Zach out to be the Vocal Point.
Once you mask him or even make him the defensive Vocal Point, he can take advantage on offensive post-ups as well on the other end and be a major screen Setter for guards and even Shooters.
Even with this being the case, I still see a zubac type of career for him.
So my prediction for Zach is to be a late Lottery to mid- round pick for a playoff team.
I personally don’t see bust, but even a key piece for a playoff team, when his size against certain teams will be very useful.
Those are just my thoughts, but please comment below your thoughts and your opinions on Zach Ed’s Nba career.
Is he a bus?
Can he be as dominant as he was in college?
Will he have a long career?
Comment your thoughts below, and, as always, it’s your boy, Jc, smooth, and I’m out.
