Two Florida deputies are recovering in the hospital after a driver intentionally plowed into them while they were on duty. The incident has sparked outrage and concern across the community.
The collision occurred in the Tampa area, where Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies were conducting a welfare check at a home in Brandon. Surveillance video of the incident, which has just been released, shows the disturbing moments leading up to and following the crash.
The deputies were standing next to a marked patrol SUV when the driver, identified as 28-year-old Ralph Bowser, returned to the scene and sped directly towards them. The video reveals the horrifying impact, with the deputies having no time to evade the speeding vehicle. Both deputies were thrown to the ground upon being struck.
After the collision, the video captures the chaotic aftermath, with other deputies shouting commands. “Taser, Taser, Taser. There’s a girl right now. I, Oh wow,” one deputy can be heard saying as they assess the situation.
Two additional deputies quickly responded, encountering Bowser as he exited his wrecked car. They pursued and apprehended him, ensuring he was taken into custody without further incident.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed the severity of the attack, stating, “These deputies never had a chance. They didn’t have a chance to get out of the way. They didn’t have a chance to do anything. He accelerated to such a high speed and struck both of them.”
The injured deputies have been identified as 39-year-old Corporal Carlos Brito and 31-year-old Deputy Manuel Santos. Both sustained serious injuries and are currently recovering at Tampa General Hospital. Their conditions are critical but stable.
Ralph Bowser faces severe legal repercussions, charged with three counts of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer. He is currently under arrest, and further investigations are ongoing to understand the full motives behind his actions.
This incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and has prompted calls for stricter measures to ensure their safety. The community continues to rally behind the injured deputies, offering support and prayers for their swift recovery.
