Albuquerque, New Mexico — On March 29, 2023, around 6:30 p.m., Albuquerque Police received a call regarding a dispute in the area of the 4700 block of Glendale Rd NW.
Initially, no officers were immediately available to respond. However, the situation escalated when a neighbor reported that Francisco Macias, 32, was firing a gun, prompting police to prioritize the call and arrive by 7:00 p.m.
According to police reports, Macias was under the influence of narcotics when he allegedly assaulted his mother and aunt inside a home in southwest Albuquerque. Shortly thereafter, he discharged his firearm outside the residence. Upon arrival, officers encountered Macias and two acquaintances in the front yard, with Macias brandishing a weapon. Commands to drop the firearm were issued by the officers.
Subsequently, Macias retreated behind a vehicle, where he was observed aiming the gun at one of his companions. In response, officers fired a total of 37 shots, but none hit their intended target. Macias and his associates then fled to the backyard, where one of them managed to disarm him and dispose of the weapon.
In a desperate attempt to evade apprehension, Macias resorted to using his companion as a shield as law enforcement closed in. Officers employed less-lethal methods, including sponge rounds and a Taser, to subdue Macias. During the altercation, Macias sustained a gunshot wound to the foot, although it remains unclear whether the projectile originated from his own firearm or from police weapons.
Following the incident, Macias was taken into custody and subsequently released from jail. All charges against him were dropped at the request of the victims involved in the altercation.
The intense bodycam footage sheds light on the chaotic and dangerous nature of the confrontation, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in managing volatile situations while ensuring public safety.
