The intense shootout between armed suspect and police (VIDEO)

At approximately 8:19 pm, a dramatic shootout unfolded in the city at the intersection of South Edgewood Terrace and Burton Avenue. The incident was a culmination of an ongoing investigation into an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon that had transpired the previous day, involving the same suspect identified as D’oria Thompson, a 33-year-old black male.

On Saturday, May 18th, around 6:00 pm, Thompson was captured on video pulling up to a business on the 4800 block of Miller Avenue. Exiting his vehicle, he was seen brandishing a handgun on his side. Thompson then approached an alleyway behind the location, where an altercation ensued with an individual off-camera. Subsequently, he drew his firearm and fired at the victim, striking them once in the shoulder before fleeing the scene.

Following the incident, officers gathered information identifying Thompson as the potential suspect, including license plate details of his vehicle. This data was promptly entered into the police system, leading to an alert the next day, Sunday, May 19th. Patrol units were dispatched after receiving information about the suspect vehicle’s whereabouts.

During the pursuit, an officer located Thompson’s vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but the suspect refused to comply. Shots were fired during the chase, resulting in damage to the officer’s vehicle, though he was fortunate to escape without gunshot wounds. However, he sustained injuries from broken glass during the exchange of gunfire.

Despite the pursuit, officers continued to search for Thompson, eventually locating his vehicle parked at a residence on Summit Ridge Trail in Arlington. Surrounding the area, they observed Thompson fleeing from the main house towards a shed in the backyard. With backup arriving, officers apprehended him without further incident.

Upon apprehension, it was discovered that Thompson had sustained a gunshot wound to his lower back. He was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Thompson now faces charges of aggravated assault against a public servant, in addition to the prior aggravated assault charge.

The incident highlights the dangers officers face in the line of duty and underscores the importance of swift and coordinated police response in ensuring public safety.
