Mexico City, Mexico – A protest by taxi drivers in the Tlalpan district of Mexico City spiraled into a violent clash with police on Monday, resulting in multiple injuries and arrests.

According to authorities, the incident occurred along Insurgentes Sur, near the El Caminero area, as taxi drivers were staging a demonstration. Tensions escalated when one of the taxi operators allegedly struck several police officers with his vehicle.

The confrontation left 7 police officers injured, with the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security confirming their deployment to the scene. In the aftermath, 17 people were taken into custody.

“This is an unfortunate event that demonstrates the need for open dialogue and understanding between all parties involved,” stated Mexico City Mayor Alfa González Máragnes. “We are committed to investigating this incident thoroughly and taking appropriate action.”

The taxi driver protest appears to have been sparked by grievances over ride-sharing regulations and competition from services like Uber. However, the violent turn of events has drawn widespread condemnation from city officials and community leaders alike.

“Violence is never the answer, and we urge all sides to resolve their differences through peaceful means,” said Tlalpan borough president Alfa González Magallanes. “The safety and well-being of our citizens, including our police force, must be the top priority.”

Authorities have pledged to release more details on the investigation as it progresses. In the meantime, the injured officers are receiving medical treatment, and the detained individuals face potential charges related to the clash.
